The identity needed to represent research not as finished knowledge, but as a discovery process built through ideas, experimentation, and connections across different fields.
Context
The Scientific Initiation Seminar at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora is an annual event dedicated to presenting and promoting research results developed by students of the institution.
The event brings together scholarship holders from Scientific Initiation programs managed by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, including projects supported by UFJF itself, FAPEMIG, and CNPq.
By receiving work from different fields of study, the seminar functions as a meeting space between multiple areas of knowledge, fostering the circulation of ideas and bringing scientific production closer to the academic community.
During my work as a professional training fellow in Graphic Design at the UFJF Institutional Image Department, I was responsible for developing the visual identity of the 21st edition of the event.
Since SEMIC receives a new visual language with each edition, I had the freedom to build an original concept while maintaining only the institutional relationship with the University.
The Visual Identity

Rather than representing only the results of science, these elements seek to value what comes before them: hypotheses, tests, calculations, drafts, and attempts.
The lightbulb illuminates this network of records, building a visual metaphor for how new discoveries emerge from accumulated knowledge and connections between different fields.
To balance the richness of detail in the illustrations, the composition was structured with linear typography, simple shapes, and predominantly clean layout. This choice preserved information legibility and kept the conceptual element as the protagonist of the communication.
The identity was deployed across the different promotional and signage materials for the event, creating a recognizable and consistent visual language for the 21st edition of the Scientific Initiation Seminar.
