The identity needed to represent research not as ready-made knowledge, but as a process of discovery built by ideas, experimentations, and connections between different areas.
Context
The Scientific Initiation Seminar of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora is an annual event dedicated to the presentation and dissemination of the results of research developed by students of the institution.
The event brings together scholarship holders from the Scientific Initiation programs managed by the Pro-Rectorate for Graduate Studies and Research, including projects supported by UFJF itself, FAPEMIG, and CNPq.
By receiving works from different fields of study, the seminar functions as a meeting space for multiple areas of knowledge, promoting the circulation of ideas and bringing scientific production closer to the academic community.
During my time as a professional training scholarship holder in Graphic Design at the Directorate of Institutional Image of UFJF, I was responsible for developing the visual identity of the 21st edition of the event.
As SEMIC receives a new visual language for each edition, I had the freedom to build my own concept, maintaining only the institutional relationship with the University.
The Visual Identity
The light bulb was chosen as the central element of the visual identity, representing the spark of an idea and the power of knowledge to illuminate new possibilities.
Around it, a composition formed by formulas, diagrams, anatomical studies, and different types of notes represents the diversity of the research presented at the seminar.
The illustrations were inspired by records of creative and scientific processes produced throughout history, including anatomical drawings, chemical formulas, biological observations, and technical sketches. Among the visual references, the Vitruvian Man appears, associated with the relationship between art, science, and investigation.

Instead of representing only the results of science, these elements seek to value what comes before them: hypotheses, tests, calculations, drafts, and attempts.
The light bulb illuminates this network of records, constructing a visual metaphor for how new discoveries emerge from accumulated knowledge and connections between different areas.
To balance the rich details of the illustrations, the composition was structured with linear typography, simple shapes, and a predominantly clean layout. This choice preserved the readability of the information and kept the conceptual element as the protagonist of the communication.
The identity was unfolded across different promotional and signage materials for the event, creating a recognizable and consistent visual language for the 21st edition of the Scientific Initiation Seminar.
